Showcasing my Technology Tools
Throughout this module, UMD4995 New and Emerging Technologies, we have been discussing and researching not only the present and futuristic technologies but how they all started as well.
Each week we researched new and emerging technologies and below is what I found.
Each week we researched new and emerging technologies and below is what I found.
New Technologies
WIFI Gun
This latest gun technology allows the most amateur of gun users hit a target up to 1KM away. This could be what we need to ensure more safety to our troops by restricting how far in to a war zone they should be. However, what could the consequences be if they made it in to the wrong hands?
Scanadu Scout
This 'Tricorder' is a new device that monitors, analyses and tracks trends in a person temperature, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, heart rate, blood pressure and stress all within 10 seconds. This could allow users to detect if they are ill, coming down with something or something just isn't right with them.
BRCK
This technology is designed to keep you online even if you lose a connection. For example, if you are running on a wireless network that goes down, if you have a SIM inserted to it, it automatically switches to a 3G or 4G network to maintain your connection. If you suffer a power cut it can run for 8 hours off its own battery power, can support up to 20 other devices connected to its WIFI and has an internal memory of 16GB in order for you to access sites such as Dropbox.
Facebook Call
Instead of using Skype it is now possible to contact people through Facebook on your iPhone. Once connected to Wifi you can call friends and even leave voicemails for them.
Smell-O-Vision
Like many other new gadgets and gizmos available, this is probably one you would expect to stay in TV programs. Inventers and researchers in Tokyo have created TV's as AD campagins that release real vapours of the product they are advertising, for example coffee. It has been designed in a way that it genuinely seems the smell is wafting directly from the screen.
Leap Motion for 3D Gesture-Sensing
This technology is primarily designed for desktop computers but soon to be for other mediums too. It is advanced motion sensing for human/computer interaction. It allows the user to control games, web pages, etc, simply by gesturing at the screen intead of using a mouse or keyboard. It is said to be similar to the technology of the Microsoft Kinect, which enables whole body motion sensing.
Google Glass
Google Glass is the latest emergence of technology. These glasses can be seen in some ways like a mobile phone/computer/tablet, etc. Why have many devices when only one will suffice?
Ask them any question; time, weather, etc.
Reply to messages.
Upload pictures/videos directly to social networking sites.
Receive live updates, messages and reminders.
These are just a few examples of what the Google Glass can do. They also allow you to connect straight to the Internet, use maps and GPS, take live
pictures and videos.
With this great new technology comes risks and problems. The first being that the glasses are expensive and it is not as simple as 'popping' to the shops to
buy them. Another is data protection. As you are walking around you are capturing people in pictures and videos, without realising and without them
knowing. A final point is in regards to exams in school. If a pupil is wearing these glasses, it would be far too easy to gain the answers through messaging friends or finding the answer through a search engine.
Google Alerts
Until this lecture I wasn't even aware that Google had extra applications on
it's search engine, just pure ignorance I suppose. However, after delving deeper
I discovered a fantastic app called Google Alerts.

You simply choose a specific topic, I chose 'technology'. A search gives you
links to blogs, reports, newspaper articles, etc, to everything in relation to
your chosen topic. You can then choose to have these 'alerts' emailed to you on
a daily basis, to ensure that you can keep up to date with the latest news.
